Ichthyologists studying coastal regions have struggled for years
to uniformly categorize which fish species are freshwater, marine or euryhaline. The
hogchoker (Family Soleidae) is commonly found in both saltwater and coastal freshwater
rivers of the Gulf of Mexico. This photograph was taken in Blue Springs, Alachua County,
Florida, over fifty miles inland from the nearest coast.
